Widely regarded as one of the best British plays to come out of the 1990s, Pentecost tells the story of Gabriela Pecs, a beautiful and passionate mid-level government functionary in a small, unnamed ex-Soviet Union country. Gabriela believes she has discovered something wonderful in an ancient, abandoned cathedral near one of her country’s borders. Realizing that a celebrated art historian from England is arriving in her country to give a talk, Gabriela, er, ‘borrows’ him at the airport and takes him on a wild ride through her nation’s roadway system that brings him face to face with what very well may be a work of art that will change the course of history.
