Francis and Clare: A World Premiere Musical
Featuring Tim Olstad as Francis and Anastacia Wells as Clare
It is a time of great inequality, with a few ‘Haves’ and many ‘Have Nots’, when new technologies and convulsive changes in society challenge the established order, when the Western world is fighting in the Middle East, and when cynical leaders promote fear and tribal fervor back at home. It’s a time when women are woefully undervalued, and the powerful elite view poverty and sickness as character flaws.
Now fast forward 800 years to today.
Above is a description of the Medieval Age, when Francis and Clare of Assisi began a movement that envisioned a new world, one that honored all human beings regardless of wealth, status or gender. A vision that still inspires us today.
The Sisters of Saint Francis will stage the world premiere of Francis & Clare, a musical about two extraordinary lives, August 4-6. It’s set in the early thirteenth century, when Francis and Clare, both born to privilege and wealth, begin questioning the values of their parents and their society, and struggle to find meaning and personal identity. They search in darkness for the inner light to guide their path. Once they discover shared values in community and relationships, their movement motivates others to live with greater mutual respect. And today, tens of thousands who belong to Franciscan religious orders worldwide continue to live by and inspire others with the teachings and legacy of Francis and Clare.
The creators of the musical believe the new world vision of Francis and Clare – that of seeking greater peace and joy and love in our lives – is worth striving for. Moreover, they hope you’ll leave the theater both entertained and moved by Francis and Clare’s faith in God, their undaunted human spirit and the power of love.
